What is Utah Green Schools?

ugs logo final

Utah Green Schools is an environmental education initiative to recognize and inspire 21st century sustainable practices in every facet of the schools in Utah including environmental literacy, health and wellness and building facilities.

In order to accomplish our goals of greater outreach through the state, including underserved populations, we have streamlined our process with an efficient Reporting Metrics.

We have strongly aligned our program to the well respected, nationwide programs of Green Schools Alliance, Project Learning Tree GreenSchools and the NAAEE.

We have partnered with these organizations to develop a rigorous Green Schools program with a strong foundation based in a robust national network, peer reviewed strategic environmental education programming, and coupled this with a Whole School Sustainability Framework, which uses guiding principles for integrating sustainability into all aspects of a school organization. We hope to effectively leverage the extensive expertise and shared fundamental values and principles of each of these proven organizations. This system framework is organized into the three components of schools: organizational culture, physical place, and educational programs. These 3 components are the foundation of the Reporting Metrics we are using for the Portfolio Form that Utah Green Schools are required to complete.

The Project Learning Tree GreenSchools Investigations inspire students as leaders in the quest to take responsibility for improving the environment at their school, home and in their community. The nationwide environmental service-learning program helps improve students’ academic performance in STEM subjects and prepares them for the globally competitive 21st century workplace. It provides teachers and students with training and resources to create healthier schools – and save money.

Who Should Participate?

What are you doing to green your school? What would you like to do? This project is targeted to reach schools, school districts, parents, and their greater communities spanning the state of Utah. The Portfolio Form Metrics

Other than the Partner Programs section, our metrics was developed through a thorough review process, including public input, by Green Schools Alliance, and is based on the Whole School Sustainability Framework. Based on years of research by the Institute for the Built Environment at Colorado State University, the Whole School Sustainability Framework illustrates how every school can establish the conditions necessary to support their journey toward sustainability across all three pillars set forth in the Green Ribbon Schools criteria.

Green Ribbon Schools Pillars:

  1. Reduced Environmental Impact and Costs
  2. Improved Health and Wellness
  3. Effective Environmental and Sustainability Education

The Whole School Sustainability Framework is organized into the three components of schools:

  1. Educational Programs
  2. Organizational Culture
  3. Physical Place

These 3 components are the foundation of the Reporting Metrics we are using for the Portfolio Form that Utah Green Schools are required to complete each year.

Utah Green Schools Resources:

Based on feedback from last year's submissions, we were asked for additional information regarding the Green-House Gas (GHG) Emissions & Reduction items.

Green Schools Alliance (GSA) offered the following very helpful resources:

The Campus Carbon Calculator (CCC) is a tool to help organizations determine how much they are contributing to global climate change, and how they can manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions better.

Green Schools Alliance Resource Center–The GSA Resource Center offers a great deal of support with many aspects of the metrics.:
