Utah Environmental Education Certification

What is EE Certification?

The Utah Environmental Education Certification Program establishes high standards for the professional qualifications of environmental educators in Utah. The program was created by a diverse team of experienced Environmental Educators from across the state who worked with representatives from a variety of national organizations to set specific standards of knowledge, skills, and experience that highly qualified Environmental Educators in Utah should be able to demonstrate.

Certified Environmental Educators are those who can demonstrate skills in the following areas:

  • Environmental Literacy
  • Foundations of Environmental Education
  • Program Development and Design
  • Program Assessment and Evaluation
  • Professional Responsibilities

Why should you apply?

Good for you as an individual:

Certification serves as an important step in the professional development of individual educators. In meeting the standards of the program candidates more fully master both the theory and practice of Environmental Education, making them more effective as professionals. Participating in the program can also provide excellent networking opportunities.

Good for the field of Environmental Education:

The certification program helps define the knowledge, skills, and ethical standards required to effectively practice Environmental Education and helps to ensure the credibility of the field.

Course Information

Individuals interested in completing their EE Certification can enroll in ENVS 4610/6610 through Utah State University to complete some of the requirements of certification. The course begins on August 26th. You can click here for more information.

In this course, we'll delve into two main aspects of EE: environmental literacy and fundamentals of environmental education as a field.  We will use the history of EE to understand the current issues in the field, distinguish between education and advocacy, and explore regional and national trends that impact environmental education. We will investigate the ecological concepts that underpin environmental literacy through an exploration of the process of science, of ecological processes and systems, and citizenship skills and responsibilities. This course has no pre-requisites and is designed to complement the Applications of EE Course.
