Environmental Justice

Environmental Justice (EJ) projects and research in Salt Lake City have allowed USEE to extend Environmental Education beyond the classroom and into the community - reaching residents and students alike.

Environmental Justice Project List:

  • West Side Environmental Justice Project
  • I Heart Rose Park
  • Keep Rose Park Beautiful
  • Environmental Justice Simulation

The West Side Environmental Justice Project

The goal of the West Side EJ Project was to identify and minimize environmental concerns and public health issues in the Rose Park neighborhood of West Salt Lake. USEE asked community members what their greatest environmental concerns were, locally, and to envision solutions to the issues. Data collected in these stakeholder meetings were used in outreach and to create information resources for community members.

I Heart Rose Park is an online resource for West Side residents created to keep them informed about local events, community resources and volunteer opportunities in and around Rose Park.

Keep Rose Park Beautiful

This research examines the recycling and waste-disposal behavior of Rose Park area residents. USEE asked participants to distribute miscellaneous household waste items among the appropriate waste bins - trash, recycle or green waste. Noting common misunderstandings, this project also includes several initiatives aimed at educating residents about municipal solid waste and how to minimize impact.

The Environmental Justice Simulation

Based on a framework developed by the Community Action Partnership of Missouri, the Environmental Justice Simulation gives participants an opportunity to experience one month in the life of individuals facing environmental health concerns at work and at home. They are simultaneously required to balance issues of race, language and finance; the reality builds quickly and insights abound.

Check back this Fall for a full synopsis, pictures of the event, participant feedback and information about how you can participate in the next Environmental Justice Simulation.
