Curriculum

2006-FW-guide-cover

Flying WILD is a program from the Council for Environmental Education and introduces students to bird conservation through standards-based classroom activities and environmental stewardship projects.

The Educator's Guide provides interdisciplinary activities that teach middle-school students about birds, their migration, and what people can do to help birds and their habitats. The Guide's many activities can be used to teach classroom lessons or to initiate service-learning projects that help birds and their habitats. The goal is to engage students in real-world learning that helps them understand the importance of migratory birds and their conservation.

The activities in the Guide are aligned to National Science Education Standards and fulfill the Utah Core Curriculum Standards. They can be used in both classroom and informal settings and can easily be adapted to meet the learning requirements for academic disciplines ranging from science and environmental education to social studies, math, and language arts. Activities are broken into teacher-led, volunteer-led or students-led categories and you will also find a guide on how to create your own school wide bird festival, with students leading the planning.

Some activities include:

  • Analyzing and interpreting proverbs about birds and what they mean (Language Arts)
  • Making food chains and webs (Science)
  • Designing and creating imaginary birds and describing their adaptations (Art and Science)
  • Counting bird populations by taking a sample (Math)
  • Role playing a council meeting to determine the use of a piece of land (Social Studies/Civics)

Student -led activities include:

  • science experiments
  • bird treat recipes
  • physical educational games resembling tag, ring toss etc.
