Utah Green Schools
What is the Green Schools Awards program?
The Utah Green Schools Awards program is an initiative to recognize and promote sustainable practices in the facility and curriculum of schools in Utah. The program builds off of the national Green Schools project whose mission is to enhance student health and learning while conserving natural resources and empowering students to develop sustainable behaviors, enabling them to become the stewards of the future. In Utah, the goal is to promote Green Schools as a way to decrease the operational costs of schools, improve the health and education of students, and conserve limited resources.

What does a Green School look like?
A Green School should strive to meet one or more of these Pillars:
1. Sustainable Facilities. This can be accomplished through new construction or retrofits to existing buildings. Sustainable facilities consume less energy and water, use local materials when possible and materials with low VOC emissivity, and incorporate renewable sources for energy and heating.
2. Sustainable Practices. This includes waste reduction and recycling, using recycled and recyclable materials when possible, incorporating local in-season food into the food program, composting and gardening, idle-free campaigns, and providing alternate forms of transportation.
3. Environmental Education. Green Schools should provide students with the information they need to make educated decisions about the environment. Environmental Education should be incorporated year-round, at each grade level, and across all disciplines. Students should also be involved with “greening” schools, making education hands-on and place-based.
4. Community Involvement. This includes partnering with organizations in the community ranging from nonprofits to government agencies to assist with and strengthen green schools efforts and assist the community in sustainable practices as an extension of the school program.
What is the application process?
To apply, a school or classroom must:
1) Form a Team – Should consist of Teachers, Students, Parents (PTA), Custodial, Maintenance, and Staff.

What does it take to qualify as a Green School?

Is there any special recognition or reward?
Other than the satisfaction, improved health and well being, and better environment there are also several levels of recognition based on how much a school or classroom participated in the program. If your school is already doing these things submit an application sharing what you are doing and gain recognition.
Bronze level – Made improvements or implemented activities to address one of the pillars within a classroom/school. (Certificates and Window Decals)
Silver level – The above programs are maintained, and an additional program pillar is added. (Engraved Plaques)
Gold level – The above programs are maintained, and an additional pillar is added. (Utah Green Schools flag)
Platinum level- The above programs are maintained and the final pillar is added (Tree Planting on school grounds or the community)
