Water:

Concerns in Rose Park

River Protection

Water_Concerns For more than 100 years after the founding of Salt Lake City, the Jordan River was used as a waste disposal area for slaughterhouses, packing plants, mineral reduction mills, and raw sewage.  Only since the establishment of the Jordan River Parkway in 1973 has the river been fully protected.

On a local level... Rose Park area residents voiced several concerns about water issues on the West Side.  While some commented about water quality in the home, most cited issues with standing water in the streets and the cleanliness of the Jordan River.

Below you will find more information about these issues and how things you might not expect make their way into our water supplies and affect the quality of our environment locally.

How is water polluted?

The contamination of freshwater supplies is largely the result of human activity.  From agriculture to industry to lawn care practices at home, our behaviors contribute to the quality of water around us.  The diagram below illustrates the many ways in which pollutants can enter our water supplies.

How does it all fit together?

The illustration above does well to show how just about anything we put onto the ground or release into the air has the potential to make its way back into our watershed system.  This includes pollution near rivers and water from storm drain systems - both concerns to local residents.

Let’s briefly consider both topics individually to see why they matter so much.

The Jordan River...

The Jordan River is a unique feature to the area and facilitates the vast leisure and recreational interests of residents.  Even more, it is home to various forms of plant and animal life that rely on the cleanliness of the river to survive.

Standing water...

Standing Water is a major concern to Rose Park area residents and is a problem for several reasons.  In addition to creating threats to the quality of our water supplies as it makes its way into the watershed, standing water also generates bad smells and can play host to numerous bacteria and other pests.
