19th Annual Utah EE Conference at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

brmbr_back

Last year's conference was held at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and was a huge success!  There were so many great things going on from the fantastic facility and the stunning setting to the sintilating sessions and fabulous food.  It was fun to see old friends and to meet new ones, too.  A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who attended, presented, sponsored, educated, nominated, networked, share-faired, commented, criticized, cooked, cleaned, addressed, ate, socialized, learned, laughed, and especially to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge who hosted this year's conference.  Really, we could not have done this with out all of you. And now for some highlights!

Desert Wars: Water and the West

The first night of the conference was an open-to-the-public screening of Desert Wars: Water and the West.  Cecil and Annette Garland, who were extensively interviewed in the film, were at the screening to answer questions and offer more of their experiences after the movie.  They provided many interesting first hand insights and fostered a captivating discussion on the issues presented in the film. They also gave their input on developments that have been occuring since the filming of the documentary.

Bargaining for Eden - The Fight for the Last Open Spaces in America

bargaining_for_edenOn Friday night, Stephen Trimble joined us before the share fair and social to talk about his new book, Bargaining for Eden - The Fight for the Last Open Spaces in America, which takes a hard look at the values that shape developers and land use policy and searches for historical context, understanding of power politics,stephen_trimble and the essence of America.  Stephen Trimble told great stories about the composition process of his book, the context that this story serves historically, facilitated a great discussion about the issues he has raised, and provided hope for the future of open space in America.

Field Trips!

Whether participants grabbed a lifejacket and headed out on the canoes or stuck a little closer to home base and explored the wetlands, the field trips were informative and out in the fresh air, but most of all fun!

Nancy's Fancy: A Culinary Celebration of Fabulous Food

The results are in!  The food at this year's conference received overwhelming and unanimous praise and support.  USEE's own Nancy Carruthers was in charge of all of the food and refreshments for this year's  conference, and wow did she do a fabulous job!  All of the food came from local farmers and suppliers such as Tony Caputo's Market and Deli, Bell Organic, Crumb Brother's Bakery, Grounds for Coffee, Sun River Farm, and Rockhill Creamery Cheese.  Most of the food was also donated by these these companies.  Some of the praise USEE received for the food:

  • I love the use of local foods!
  • I loved all of the "eat local" food.  Everything was amazing!
  • Food was best ever!
  • Best I've eaten at any conference!

Kudos to Nancy and everyone who helped her out with preparation, display, and all else that went into feeding us all during our time at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

An Amazing Feat:

There were about 90 people at our two day conference at which these 90 people were fed breakfast and lunch as well as some snacks during breaks.  Through all of this, during the entire conference only one bag of trash was generated.  JUST ONE!  This was accomplished by some careful planning, a bit of brainstorming, and a vision to reduce the amount of waste the conference would inevitably generate.  USEE purchased reusable plates, cups, and silverware from a thrift store.  Conference attendees were asked to bring their own coffee mugs and water bottles.  Whatever could be recycled, was recycled, and a five gallon plastic bucket was filled with food waste.  These scraps were then saved to be added to staff compost heaps or were donated to USEE's worms.

An added benefit of USEE's new supply of reusable plates, cups, and sliverware is that these reusable utensils are available to rent for Institutional Members of USEE.  Your own organization's conferences and events can now sport a mis-matched array of reusable responsibilty!  If your organization would like to borrow our supply, call us at 801-328-1549 to reserve them today!
