Teach Outdoor Education in Beautiful Southeastern Utah

Canyon Country Outdoor Education based at Arches National Park and The Youth Garden Project are currently recruiting AmeriCorps volunteers to teach outdoor education to 1st – 6th grade students.

The Job
AmeriCorps members work approximately 25-30 hours per week, Jan – Dec, teaching both with Canyon Country Outdoor Education and the Youth Garden Project. CCOE field trips lead local students on science based adventures in Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and the surrounding Bureau of Land Management Lands. Members have the opportunities to explore pothole ecology with sixth graders, search for fossils with fifth graders, throw atlatls with third graders, to name a few. At the Youth Garden Project members will have the opportunity to design and run summer day camp activities. Members will also mentor and work with high school apprentices who are also AmeriCorps members.

Qualifications
Applicant must have a strong desire to work with children in the outdoors, have good communication skills and a base knowledge of natural history. Candidate must be in good physical condition; be able to work in steep, rocky terrain, and in extreme weather. Experience teaching or working with children is preferred. Individual must provide own housing and transportation to work station.

The Rewards
Over the course of their 900 work hours, members will receive $6,750 in stipends. At the end of their service members receive a $2363 education award. This education award can be used for both future and past education costs. In addition, during your time as an AmeriCorps service member, students loan payments will be deferred with the accrued interest paid. There is also the joy of working with children in the outdoors.
