Sustainable Businesses UNITE! That is what kept echoing in my head throughout ReDirect Guide’s fantastic and enlightening member appreciation event. The purpose of the event is pretty evident within the name, but as the night played on, it was clear there was much more to it.
Mike Johnson is the founder of the ReDirect Guide and credits receiving the idea, while struggling for advertising opportunities for his newly-developed eco-smart company. He recognized the difficulty both financially and demographically in promoting a business that traditionally hasn’t been a part of the consumer market. Not only did he envision a resource that would aid sustainable businesses in reaching consumers, but would help drive the efforts to responsibly educate the community about alternate ways to direct their purchases.
The staff members demonstrated ReDirect’s philosophy at the event by displaying informative literature and having everyone gather in a circle to hear one another’s missions and current efforts. The direct result of this was instant connections and collaborations. I stood in the circle, explained USEE’s mission, goals, and programming and then watched and listened to other individuals and groups do the same. Even though my intentions on attending were only to observe and interview the staff members of ReDirect, I couldn’t help brainstorming potential collaborations for USEE! With the great food, refreshing beverages, and enjoyable atmosphere-- I admit, it was more pleasure than work.
ReDirect Guide supports and promotes sustainable businesses throughout the Salt Lake and Park City area. That is a lot of ground to cover; luckily, they have a remarkable staff to get the job done. The first staff member I briefly spoke with at the event was Lara Gale, ReDirect’s Outreach and Promotion Assistant. She explained to me how there are many environmentally–focused industries that are unaware of each other yet share the common struggle of having to compete with businesses that have a strong economic grip and choose not to practice the same sustainable efforts. Lara expressed that ReDirect “wants to help these businesses that are a part of a community of values.” A community of values - this pulled the whole picture together for me. ReDirect is not only a resource guide to sustainable businesses, but is also there to enrich the community through education and awareness. With great effort, they provide Salt Lake City residents an option that connects with their values as well as assists others who wish to direct their dollars toward supporting sustainability.
After speaking to Lara, the aroma of food filled the room and directed my attention to the serving table. Not being able to make up my mind, I began to pace back and forth over a great selection of appetizers donated by Climber’s Café. After a moment or so, I quickly realized I was beginning to resemble the stalking motion of a vulture and decided to leave the food table and continue the interview with ReDirect Guide’s Area Advocate, Mary Rogers. Mary concentrates most of her efforts on gathering resources and other assets that will help local sustainable businesses. One piece of information that I had not been aware of, but became immediately intrigued by when she mentioned it, is the ReDirect Guide’s green business certification process. This process helps ensure that businesses referenced within the book coincide with the mission and goals of the ReDirect Guide.
The Guide’s green business certification reinforces their value of offering the community a reliable go-to source for businesses and organizations that support and practice sustainability. In order for a business to even be considered for the guide, a ReDirect staff member interviews the business owner and determines if the company/organization's operations and products are consistent with ReDirect's standards for featured businesses. In the words of MC Hammer, ReDirect Guide is adding up to be too legit, too quit! (And hopefully they don’t). When you consider the operations of the ReDirect Guide, legitimacy is invaluable when it comes to placing your trust where you plan to place your money, and it makes the ReDirect Guide a truly remarkable and unique resource.
You can pick up this FREE extensive guide at many restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, and other businesses around the Salt Lake and Park City area. You can even stop by USEE to pick up a guide. If you want to learn more about the ReDirect Guide please visit: redirectguide.com.
